About Winston County Arts Council

Every Child is an Artist

Winston County Arts Council, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was formed in 2007 by a handful of volunteers, with its main goal to bring fine arts instruction to our citizens, especially the county school students.

With grants from the State Department of Education, State Council on the Arts, TVA, Cullman Electric, and donations from many individuals and businesses, we have been able to put part-time art teachers in the county schools, plus sponsor a drama team.

Renovation of Looney’s Amphitheater

In October 2022, we were able to purchase Looney’s Amphitheater Complex, which had gone mostly unused for 20 years. It was formally the home of Alabama’s official outdoor musical, The Incident at Looney’s Tavern.

We began a complete renovation of the 13 acre property and five buildings. With appropriations from the Alabama State Legislature and grants from the State Department of Tourism, Walker County Community Foundation, Alabama Power Foundation, and many wonderful individuals and businesses, we have completed about half of the necessary renovations.

The indoor theater was the first venue to be completed, and it is consistently in use for concerts, plays, forums, etc. Next was the office building, which was enlarged and completely updated on the inside.

The former restaurant building got a new roof and restrooms. We began to host reunions, meetings, interactive mystery dinners, and other gatherings in the building.

Community & Culture

We are currently finishing the 18-hole minigolf course, 18 Holes of Winston County”. There will also be a museum of Winston County, an arcade, a pickleball court, a sandwich shop, and a gift shop featuring works by local artists and artisans. At the Winson County Arts Council, we love our county and want everyone to know its unique history as well as bountiful resources!
